Khine Nwe Oo — Officials from the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Tanintharyi Region have been collecting books to prepare for an upcoming legal capacity building class organized by the party's central headquarters, according to the NLD’s Chairman Tanintharyi Region, U Ho Pin.

The course is being funded by the Htoo Foundation whose chairman is businessman Tay Za. One of Burma's richest individuals, Tay Za, continues to be subject to targeted sanctions by the US government. The class will be held at the Shwe San Eain Hotel, an expensive hotel the tycoon owns in Naypyidaw.

The NLD will hold a training class in five sessions for incoming MPs from across the country. Other participants are coming from Irrawaddy Region and in Mon State. The training will take place in January.

“We have been instructed to read books so we can discuss in class. So we have been finding and collecting the books,” said U Ho Pin, an incoming MP who won a seat in the Dawei constituency during last month's election.

The books will cover topics relating to the constitution, the party’s organization, the election declaration, rules and regulations.

Although some commentators have criticized these training program, lawyer U Ko Ni who will be running the course, has maintained that there are no reasons for him not to hold the class.

“I think U Ko Ni will explain about the constitution during this class. Also, I’m close with some of the instructors but I’m not familiar with other instructors,” U Ho Pin told the BNI Election Newsroom.
