Khine Nwe Oo — A man set his national registration card (NRC) on fire in front a hundred people in Mon State’s Lamine town after not being allowed to vote, according to U Moe Myint Oo, Lamine Myoma (3) administrator.
“I don’t know whether or not he was included in the voter list. We gave him a credential letter because he said he wanted to vote. He must have set his card on fire in anger after he learned he was not allowed to vote,” said U Moe Myint Oo.
U Jain asked for a credential letter from the Myoma administrator after he heard that he can vote as long he has his NRC. He waited in line to vote until being informed that he could not vote even with a NRC card. It was at this point U Jain set it on fire in front of the officials from the ward and village commission and onlookers.
When U Jain was contacted by the media, he said his name was not included in the voter list after it was released 3 separate times due to numerous errors. He asked the Union Election Commission to amend it and they gave him various reasons why they couldn’t do it.
“I was told that I can vote if I have my NRC. I set it on fire because I feel it’s useless even during such an important time like now. I’m not the only one who has not been allowed to vote. Other people have also lost their rights due to various reasons,” explained U Jain.
