Khine Nwe Oo — An updated voter list with an additional 1,741 eligible voters on it has been released in Tanintharyi Region’s Dawei Township, according to the Region’s Election Commission officer U Htain Linn Oo.
The updated list was released on Monday and as of Tuesday nobody had asked for it to be amended, he explained.
“These people have been added as there was still time and it was inclusive in terms of the law. Some names have been removed due to various circumstances. This is the latest list and no one has come to amend it yet,” said U Htain Linn Oo.
As this is the last voter list to be released before Election Day, Commission officials have said that they tried to ensure that the list is as error-free as possible. That being said, the voter list determines who can and cannot vote, and Commission officials have denounced a rumor that anyone over the age of 18 can vote whether or not they are on the list as long as they bring their national identity card.
“It’s a waste of time and money for some parties to spend their time checking whether or not the voter list is correct. It would be better if anyone of age from Dawei area is allowed to vote. I’ve heard that everyone can vote, but the parties have not been informed about it,” said U Aye Min, a Regional Parliament candidate from the Dawei Nationalities Party, in reference to the rumor.
According to latest voter list Tanintharyi Region has 984,703 eligible voters. With 1,170 polling stations set to be opened across the Region, each polling station will be required to accommodate approximately 840 voters.
