Khine Nwe Oo — “[O]ur party is not very popular and it’s only a normal party so we are weak. We are weak when running against other parties” says Daw Hnin Kay, a Lower House candidate from the National Unity Party (NUP) who is running in Tanintharyi Region’s Dawei constituency, in an interview with the BNI newsroom.

Daw Hnin KayQ: Can you tell us the difficulties you have faced in campaigning?

A: I have been traveling to the regional areas and wards for the campaign. As this is a multi-party [election], some areas are easier for us while some are difficult. What I meant by difficult is that when two parties coincide, our party is not very popular and it’s only a normal party so we are weak. We are weak when running against other parties.

The party’s spirit is not weak. When two parties coincide, we select our hardcore members to speak. We don’t speak ill of the opposition party just to win. Our candidates must follow ethics and only speak positively about our party. We have published a book. They have to rally in accordance with it.
We don’t bring down the dignity of the other parties.

Q: What’s the potential winning rate of the National Unity Party in running against other opposition parties?

A: Our party is successful at the moment. It’s not very low. We don’t use parade cars like other parties when campaigning. We use our own method to go door to door and personally distribute pamphlets on each street. The strength and weakness will only be known on the Election Day.

Q: Have you carried out any political activities in the past?

A: I became a party member in 2010. There haven’t been any activities. I’ve only carried out political activities starting from this year. I have a big aim and I hope to achieve it. I was a civil servant in the past.

I had worked as an auditor since I graduated from the University of Economics. I took a pension from there and entered this party. I have only run in the election. I don’t have any other political activities. I only carried out activities as a party [member].

Q: What contributions will you make for this region if you win?

A: If I win…what the region need is electricity and good roads. If there is electricity at a low cost, the people’s standard [of living] will become higher. The economy would become better. Dawei has many products. If the road and communications are good, these products will get good prices and all the living standards and education standard of the Tanintharyi Region will become developed. Also, good roads need to be built in order to develop the economy. All of these can be carried out so the priority is having good roads.

Q: If something goes wrong in the election, what do you plan to continue to do for the region?

A: If we win, the aim of the entire party is to continue to work for the party’s success. If not, we will continue to work for our party’s survival. In order for the party to work, the party must have authority.
If the party does not have the authority, everything we have spoken is just words. We need to continue to work for the strength and conciseness of the party and increase the resources for our party’s survival.
