Unexploded artillery shell kills two teenagers and injures four others in Rathedaung

Kaing Lu Hla - Two teenagers were killed and four more were injured when an unexploded artillery shell detonated Saturday evening. The incident occurred in Katchaung village, Rathedaung Township.

The deceased were identified as 15-year-old Nay Myo Lin and 9 - year-old Myo Naing Oo.

A village elder said, “Previously the navy had shelled the area close to where their house is, and some of the shells didn’t explode and were just lying there. They found a shell and picked it up, started playing with it in their hands, and it fell to the ground and exploded. Maung Nay Myo Lin died on the spot and Myo Naing Oo died in hospital. Four more children were injured, ”he said.

The injured are Maung Phyo Nyein Lin, 13; Zaw Min Tun, 17; Zaw Naing, 13 and Nay Toe Lin, 10. Zaw Min Tun was seriously injured, he said.

The incident took place at 4:30 pm on August 1.

U Maung Kyaw Zan, a Pyithu Hluttaw member from Buthidaung Township, said he had contacted villagers who had told him that a young man had been killed and five others were injured when an unexploded shell detonated in Katchaung village.

Three of the injured youths arrived at Sittwe Hospital on the evening of August 1.

Rathedaung Township Khin Maung Latt, a member of the National Assembly, said: “One of the three children who arrived at Sittwe Hospital appeared to be seriously injured. He had been hit just by his eye. He was also injured in the abdomen and has a shortness of breath.  The other one lost some fingers. The third was not seriously injured, ”he said.
