Five Muslims were reportedly injured in a junta artillery attack on Du Nyaungbingyi Village, part of Arakan State's Maungdaw Township, at around 1 a.m. on October 19.
The five were wounded when Myanmar Navy vessels at the mouth of Naf River fired mortar shells into the village, local sources said.
"Mortar shells fired by Myanmar Navy vessels in the Naf River fell in the village when locals were sleeping. The injured are internally displaced people (IDPs). The regime intentionally fired mortar shells to instill fear among the locals," said an IDP in Maungdaw.
Among the injured are Anar Pohsaung, 42, from Du Nyaungbingyi Village, and Rabia Bawsawyi, 17, Amed Khawbi, 65, Mamod Inas, 34, and Mamed Ayas, 29, from Kanyintan Ward in the town of Maungdaw.
The wounded are reportedly being treated by the Arakkha Army (AA) at an undisclosed location deemed safe.
The regime over recent days has stepped up air attacks on AA positions near Border Guard Police Battalion No. 5, the last standing junta battalion in besieged Maungdaw, according to locals.
Du Nyaungbingyi is located about five miles south of Maungdaw Town and there was no fighting in the area when the mortar shells landed and exploded in the village early Saturday morning, locals said.
"Du Nyaungbingyi Village is too far from Border Guard Police Battalion No. 5 [to justify an attack] and there is no fighting in the area. The military regime's intentional targeting of civilians is a war crime," the IDP added.
Hundreds of local people from nearby villages have fled to safer locations following the junta artillery assault on Du Nyaungbingyi Village.
Clashes between the military and AA are reported on a daily basis as the ethnic armed group is attempting to capture the entirety of Maungdaw Township.
