Rakhine State Suffered the Most Human Rights Violations in Past Week

The Network for Human Rights Documentation (Myanmar) reported that Rakhine State suffered the highest incidence of human rights violations committed by the Junta armed forces among the 11 states and regions in Myanmar over the past week, with a total of 17 cases.

The report for the week spanning December 8th to 14th reveals that the Military Council committed major human rights violations 17 times in Rakhine State, 11 in Shan State, 9 in Sagaing Region, 5 in Tanintharyi Region, 2 each in Mandalay and Ayeyarwady Regions, and 1 each in Bago and Magway Regions, as well as Karenni (Kayah) and Karen State.

Politician U Aung Thaung Shwe has concluded that an escalation in human rights violations by the Military Council could potentially lead to a more intense resistance struggle against its rule.

"The Military Council is disregarding human rights principles, and they've been doing this for years without upholding ethics or morals. As they continue violating human rights, the opposition across the country is only growing stronger”, he told DMG.

The Military Council ‘s actions includes attacking civilian areas using small arms and artillery, conducting airstrikes on civilian targets, unjustly arresting civilians, including minors, and intentionally burning homes and buildings owned by the people.

In Rakhine State and Tanintharyi Region, seven individuals, including a child, were arrested and charged for disseminating information on social media, about the misconduct of the Military Council.

Between November 13th, when the conflicts in Rakhine State re-ignited, and December 18th, data from DMG indicates that there were 28 fatalities and 123 injuries in Rakhine State and Paletwa Township in Chin State, all stemming from unprovoked attacks by the Military Council.

The regime ‘s troops have also been arresting Rakhine residents, leading to the detention of over 100 civilians in Sittwe, Ponnagyun, Buthidaung, Maungdaw, Minbya, Kyaukphyu, Ramree, and Thandwe townships.

Following significant losses in crucial military bases and economically vital trading posts throughout the country, the Military Council resorted to escalating attacks against civilians as an act of frustration.

"In the Rakhine State clashes, the Military Council is taking out their frustration on the public because they couldn't effectively counter the Arakan Army's offensives”, a Rakhine-based humanitarian worker said.

For over a month now, the Military Council has sealed off land routes and waterways in Rakhine State, leading to food shortages affecting both local residents and those displaced by the conflict.
