The Military Council apprehended a member of the National League for Democracy (NLD) who had been hiding within the Hpa Pyin village vicinity in Mhaw Si Sar village tract situated in Hpakant Township of Kachin State on March 6th.
According to her family, Daw Mar Mar Aye, a 40-year-old member of the NLD Party in Taze Township, Sagaing Region, was arrested while seeking refuge at her younger sister's residence in Hpa Pyin.
"Recently relocated, she had been residing at her sister's house where a grocery store was established. At approximately 7:00 PM, while she was at the shop, soldiers entered and apprehended her. The woman was a guest from the Sagaing Region and it remains unclear how the soldiers received information about her presence and conducted the arrest”, a source said.
Daw Mar Mar Aye migrated to Hpakant area in early February along with three family members.
Currently, the whereabouts of Daw Mar Mar Aye are unknown, and she has lost contact with her family members.
There are some locals who suspect that Daw Mar Mar Aye's detention may have been facilitated by informants.
Frequent arrests of civilians have been reported in Hpakant, on March 1st, 200 civilians were arrested from Sharaw Hka village, while on February 27th, more than 80 civilians were detained from Sabyit Khuu village. Moreover, on March 6th, an unknown armed organization forcibly abducted more than 30 youths from Longhkin village, marking another recent incident in the area.
Following these incidents, some individuals managed to escape, while others remain in detention.
As of March 6th, 2023, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) has reported that the number of civilians arrested in Myanmar since the military coup has reached 16304.
