Five Injured in Mongngaw Town Airstrike in Northern Shan State

Five people were injured and several houses were damaged when a junta airstrike hit Mongngaw (Mongngawt) Town in Kyaukme Township, Kyaukme District, northern Shan State, on 17 November 2024.

A junta aircraft dropped two 300 pound bombs on Manlong Ward in the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA)-controlled town of Mongngaw, at about noon on 17 November, according to a resident of Mongnaw Town who spoke to Shan Herald.

He said: ““At around noon, junta aircraft dropped two bombs, injuring five locals and destroying houses. We had been hearing jet sounds on and off since the morning, but we didn’t expect them to target Manlong. That’s why the locals didn’t evacuate and stayed in their homes. Everyone was shocked when the strike occurred.”

Also, previously in Kyaukme District, a junta airstrike on Longsan Village in the TNLA-controlled township of Naungcho (Nawnghkio), at around 8:30pm on 16 November, killed a 12-year-old girl and injured three others.

On 17 November, a woman from Longsan Village said: “Recently, the junta has been carrying out airstrikes almost daily. Last night, around 8:30 pm, an aircraft carried out a bombing attack, again, killing a 12-year-old girl and injuring three other villagers. Many locals are now too afraid to stay in their homes, and some have already evacuated.”

The Three Brotherhood Alliance, including the TNLA, captured Mongngaw Town on 31 December 2023.

A TNLA-led coalition took Kyaukme Town, the administrative centre of Kyaukme Township, which includes Mongngaw, on 6 August 2024 after a two-month long battle. Around 80 civilians were killed, and more than 300 houses were destroyed during the fighting, according to data collected by Shan Herald.
