The junta has greatly heightened security measures at Sittwe Airport after confrontations with the Arakan Army (AA) in Wah Bo village, which is situated on the outskirts of Sittwe, Arakan State.
A Sittwe local mentioned, "A military battalion has been sent to ensure complete security at Sittwe Airport. Troops are deployed throughout the airport, and surprise patrols are established. The junctions that lead to the airport, including the Nanda Yarma junction, have been shut down. Helicopters have been utilized as well.”
Arakan State features four principal airports: the Thandwe and Ann airports are controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), whereas the Sittwe and Kyaukphyu airports are governed by the junta.
The local individual remarked, “Sittwe Airport is the sole crucial access point for the junta. If it collapses, it would entirely sever links with Yangon and Naypyidaw. The existing land path to Sittwe is unreachable, and navigating the waterway is challenging. This is the reason Sittwe Airport holds significant importance for the junta.“
The junta has increased security measures at Sittwe Airport and placed landmines in the surrounding region.
The resident mentioned, “Landmines are located around 50 yards from the airport, particularly on the side facing the sea. I’ve been informed that landmines are scattered everywhere, and access is restricted for people. Travelers are undergoing multiple checks within the airport, and the Military Intelligence Unit (SaYaPha), along with police, are observing closely.“
Another resident reported that the junta has intensified its military deployment at critical sites and junctions throughout the city, such as Sittwe University, Set Yoe Kya Creek Bridge, Strand Road, and the region between Bu May Muslim Village and Thel Chaung Village. Tanks have been observed moving through the city.
The locals stated, “They are getting ready for battle as though it’s about to happen. Military operations in those parts of the city have surged, with troops stationed there. Following the shooting in Wah Bo, their attention has turned increasingly toward Sittwe. Tanks are also patrolling the city.“
Reports suggest military movements on either side of the Sittwe-Ah Myint Kyun road near Sittwe, in addition to multiple sites such as Shwe Min Gan jetty, Kyar Ma Thauk, and Par Da Leik ferry terminal.
Even though Sittwe has been peaceful recently with no sounds of gunfire, a local has characterized the scenario as "the calm before a storm."
