The Burmese authority has extended the term of military council for another six months.
On 31 July, a meeting of the National Defense and Security Council (NDSC), held in NayPyiTaw, took the decision to extend the military council’s tenure.
The junta took over the political power on 1 February 2021 ousting the democratically elected Aung San Suu Kyi’s government.
According to provisions of the 2008 Constitution, the state of emergency can be declared for up to two years and it can be extended once for one year and two times for six months.
Acting President U Myint Swe, former speaker of People's Hluttaw U Ti Khun Myat, military council chief of defense staff general Min Aung Hlaing, deputy C-in-C lieutenant general Soe Win, Union defense minister general Mya Tun Oo, NDSC members and many invitees were present in the meeting.
It is understood that the ruling military council has been planning to hold the national election in August 2023, after the military regime completes two years.
National League for Democracy, NUG and the international community have already objected to the plan for the polls, apprehending the credibility.
