Junta leader’s trip to Russia just an effort to find way out of Myanmar's economic crisis

The four-day visit of General Min Aung Hlaing to Russia is just an attempt to find an answer to Myanmar's economic woes, political and economic analysts told Than Lwin Times.

General Min Aung Hlaing will attend the 77th East Economic Forum 2022, which will take place in Vladivostok, Russia, from September 5 to 8.

The statement said that the military regime will hold talks with officials of the government of the Russian Federation in order to further cement cooperation in friendly ties, economic and all other sectors.

Political and economic analyst U Ye Tun (Hsipaw) opined that the military leader's visit could discuss ways to solve the economic sanctions of Western countries, including the United States, and direct cash payments instead of dollars in the time of economic crisis.

In addition, U Ye Tun noted that the military leader may also discuss buying fuel from Russia and importing it through India.

Political analyst U Than Soe Naing pointed out, "although the military may deal with the issue of fuel and the dollar during the upcoming trip to Russia, their plan might not be effective in reversing the current economic crisis. The military council has no power to get out of this situation. The situation will only get worse."

The European Union countries, including the United States, have imposed economic sanctions and visa restrictions on top military officials, including military leader General Min Aung Hlaing, for human rights violations since the coup.

Junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing visited Russia for the first time after the coup on the 21st of June, 2021, to attend the Moscow Conference on International Security.

In addition, on July 10 of this year, a military leader visited Russia for the second time with the monks led by Sitagu Sayadaw Ashin Nyanissara for the consecration ceremony of a pagoda in Moscow’s world cultural heritage site. But Russia's President Vladimir Putin has never received General Min Aung Hlaing.

On the other hand, the military leader's visit to Russia included discussions on the purchase of military weapons and military aircraft, including technology to defeat the People's Defense Forces, which took up arms to fight against the regime, according to political observers.
