The number of drug seizure cases in Kyauk Phyu Township has increased year after year and the number of drug busts beginning this year has reached six up to June, according to No. 48 Anti-Drug Squad in Kyauk Phyu Township.
There were three busts each in 2015, 2016 and 2017 in Kyauk Phyu district but it had reached 10 cases last year, according to the figures of the Anti-Drug Squad.
Police also said that most cases involve young people, and four out of six cases are related to young people between 15 and 25 years old.
These young people are drug users and they were found in possession of 10 to 1000 tablets when they were arrested, police said.
“We have to arrest them for possession of drugs. They dropped out of school before they completed their education. Due to poor job opportunities, they become victims of narcotic drugs without realizing it,” said police captain Myo Thein from the No. 48 Anti-Drug Squad.
He added that, because many young people are using and trafficking drugs, this could harm the country and people from all social strata. So, prevention measures should be implemented to educate people and help youngster from becoming victims of drug addiction.
“Illegal drug use is a lethal liability for the country. So, all people from different age groups have a civic and personal responsibility to oppose using illegal drugs. All people need to keep in mind is that illegal drugs are not good for society and it should not be tolerated.
