The United Nation's Development Program (UNDP) organised a ‘Candidate Information Session’ meeting, where the public could find out more about Chin State election candidates, at Carson Hall in Hakha on 12 October.
Candidates representing the National League of Democracy (NLD), the Chin National Democratic Party (CNDP), the Chin League of Democracy (CLD) and the Ethnic National Development Party (ENDP) in constituencies in Hakha, Tidim, Matupi, Kanpalet and Mindat attended the meeting along with 15 of their personal secretaries.
Daw Sui Sung, the CLD candidate for Hakha Township no. 1 constituency said: “Because of transportation problems attendance at the session was less than we had previously expected and most of candidates are campaigning in remote areas.”
Issues discussed at the one day session included: the election timetable, how the Election Commision is organised, the candidates' duties, voting, pre-voting, the counting of votes and the result. Officials from the Elections also answered other questions from the public.
There are 273,673 voters in 39 constituencies in Chin State. There are 202 candidates fighting for seats in the Upper and Lower Houses of the Union Parliament and the Chin State Parliament. Of those, eight are independent candidates.
