Most junta government employees in Chin State have not received any salary for the last three months, causing them and their families many hardships.
A junta government employee from the Chin State capital of Hakha said: "The Myanma Economic Bank [MEB] has run out of cash reserves. The [junta] government hasn't been able to pay its employees for the past three months.”
The MEB branch in Kalay (a.k.a. Kale) in Sagaing Region, just across the state border from Chin State, is. responsible for managing all salary payments and money transfers to Chin junta government employees.
Another government employee said that the skyrocketing prices of goods in Chin State are causing increased hardships for government employees. He said that he is only managing to get by with the help and support of relatives living abroad.
The junta has not commented on the non-payment of its government employees in Chin State.
Approximately 250,000 people—about half of Chin State's population—are internally displaced or have fled to neighbouring countries and are in urgent need of humanitarian aid, according to a 3 June 2024 statement by the Chin Human Rights Organization (CHRO).
