Chairman of Yangon’s Twante Township Kayin People's Party shot dead

The chairman of the Kayin People's Party (KPP) in Twante Township, in Yangon Region, Al Mu Gyi, was shot dead on the morning of 30 April according to a local source.

He said that that Al Mu Gyi was killed by the Twante Guerilla Force on the Twante to Maubin Road, while he was temporarily staying at Mayangone 1st street, in Twante Township’s Zay Thit ward, 20km to the west of Yangon.

"He was born in Lay Eain Su Village in Twante-Tagun Daing Village Tract. In Twante Township, he was the chairman of the Kayin People's Party. He also worked with Minister Saw Tun Aung Myint, who was appointed by the junta, and Mahn Nyein Maung, a member of the State Administration Council (SAC). He was killed for assisting the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), a Border Guard Force (BGF) [government militia], in establishing and arming Pyu Saw Htee [government militia] groups. He passed away on the spot”, said An official from the Twante Guerilla Force.

He added that Al Mhu Gyi, who had a good relationship with the Military Council, had ordered the arrest of several PDF members on various charges.

According to local residents, he also urged Karen people to support the military junta and forced teachers from the Karen Literature and Culture School in Twante Township, who were on strike as part of the Civil Defence Movement (CDM), to go back to work. Mizzima has been unable to confirm these allegations.
