ASEAN envoy meets UN envoy to discuss Myanmar impasse

ASEAN’s current Secretary General has met with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar to discuss the Five-Point Consensus and humanitarian aid for crisis-hit Myanmar.

ASEAN-Secretariat, Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr Kao Kim Hourn received the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar Dr Noeleen Heyzer on 6 April in Jakarta.

They took the opportunity to discuss and exchange views on regional efforts, particularly of ASEAN and the UN, in supporting the implementation of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus and in working with the ASEAN Chair’s Office of Special Envoy to Myanmar.

Dr Kao also shared ASEAN’s efforts in delivering humanitarian assistance in Myanmar to support all those in need, as coordinated by the Secretary-General of ASEAN as the ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance Coordinator (SG-AHAC) with the support of the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre).

He also said he appreciated the strong support of the international community, including the UN, for ASEAN to play a leading role in addressing the situation in Myanmar.

Myanmar has been in crisis since the military illegally grabbed power in a coup on 1 February 2021.

Analysts claim there has been no progress with the Five-Point Consensus signed by ASEAN members in 2021, including the Myanmar junta.
