All Staff of Thandwe Hospital Evacuated After Artillery Shell Explosions in Town

In Thandwe Township, Arakan (Rakhine) State, intense clashes resulted in artillery shells hitting town areas, causing casualties and prompting all staff, including the director of Thandwe Hospital, to evacuate.

“The hospital has been locked since July 10. We heard that all the staff already fled”, a Thandwe resident told Narinjara.

On July 9, explosions from shelling by the junta's Thukhosan artillery base near Sarnitaung in Thandwe occurred near Nyaungbin Market, Dwayawaddy Myothit Ward, and around the hospital compound, injuring a couple.

An anonymous source reported that all the staff left the hospital after the incident.

“Junta’s shelling in recent days caused explosions in downtown areas, including near the hospital, leading to casualties. After that, all hospital staff departed, leaving some patients behind”, she said.

After all staff, including the hospital director, departed, patients, including those in emergency care, were left without access to healthcare, facing significant hardships.

“Now all the patients are struggling. There are no doctors available to treat them”, she added.

Narinjara attempted to contact Thandwe Hospital regarding the departure of all staff, including the director, but was unable to reach them.

In Thandwe, clashes between the Arakha Army (AA) and the junta are intensifying, with daily casualties among the local population due to junta artillery barrages, airstrikes, and navy bombardments.

On July 10, an artillery shell fired by the junta killed Daw San San Aye (35) and a trawler worker, while injuring six other villagers in Kyaukseik Village, Kinmaw Village Tract, Thandwe.

Following AA's capture of the junta's 566th Light Infantry Battalion base in Thandwe and Mazin Airport, artillery bombardments by junta troops stationed at Thandwe prison have intensified.
