About 20 people were killed when a junta airstrike targeted a wedding at a monastery in Myaing Township, Magway Region on 25 February 2025 at around 9:00 am.
The Sonkone Village monastery, near the Kyaukkhwet oil field in Myaing Township, was hosting a local resistance member’s wedding on 25 February when the airstrike hit at about 9:00 am.
A villager who spoke to Than Lwin Times on 25 February said: “As of now, the death toll is around 20, and many others are injured. The casualties are high because the attack happened at a crowded time.”
He also said that, at that time, exact casualty numbers were unknown because searching for bodies and injured victims was still underway. This was complicated because the searchers were having to be very cautious and alert to possible further junta airstrikes.
It is expected that local resistance forces will release accurate figures for deaths and casualties resulting from the airstrike once the searching has been properly completed.
The junta has increased its aerial bombardments of Magway Region. As well as using planes it has also increased its use of paramotors to drop bombs. These have a pilot with a motorised propellor on their back suspended beneath a canopy that looks like a parachute. The pilots carry bombs and drop them by hand onto targets they fly over.
On 23 February 2025, paramotors killed eight civilians and injured a further five when they dropped bombs on to Monhnyin Village in Sidoktaya Township, in Magway Region.
