An Arakanese soldier was killed in an encounter with Burmese Army soldiers after he killed two army officers on Saturday at a base in Taikkyi Township in Rangoon Division.

The soldier was identified as Kyaw Shwe Maung from Light Infantry Battalion 707 based in Taikkyi Township.

Kyaw Shwe Maung killed a major and a senior warrant officer of the LIB 707 and fled to Prom Township in Pegu devision, according to a local source.

After reaching Owe Pho Township, he was surrounded by soldiers and a gun fight ensued. Kyaw Shwe Maung took shelter in a transformer box and tried to defend himself.

Kyaw Shwe Maung was eventually shot dead.  He received seven bullet wounds, while a major and a soldier of the Burmese Army sustained critical injuries.

A local witness said that over 300 soldiers went after Kyaw Shwe Maung and fired on him. There are no details available on why Kyaw Shwe Maung killed the two army officials at the base headquarters.
