Clashes Occurs on Ye-Thanbyuzayat Road, Resulting Casualty on Both Sides

According to local sources and resistance groups, a clash broke out at 5:30 AM this morning, December 17, between the military council forces and resistance forces along Milepost 8 of the Union Road on the Ye-Thanbyuzayat route in Ye Township, Mon State.

The attack targeted military council troops stationed near Kwam Kyaik village, between Mawkanin and Kaninkamot villages. Joint resistance forces, including the New Mon State Party (Anti-Dictatorship) (NMSP-AD), were involved in the operation.

During the clash, at least ten military council troops were reportedly wounded, while the resistance side also suffered casualties, a resident from Mawkanin confirmed.

“Around 5:40 AM, resistance groups, including AD forces, engaged in fighting near Kwam Kyaik, which continued until after 8 AM. I heard that both sides sustained casualties, with over ten military council troops injured, though the exact number of deaths or details remain unclear,” the resident said.

Junta forces were sent to the site of the clash, including units from No. 588th Light Infantry Battalion stationed in Ye, No. 317th Artillery Battalion in Mawkanin, and No. 106th Infantry Battalion near Mawkanin village. These units provided support using both heavy and light artillery, which may have resulted in further casualties.

The NMSP-AD spokesperson stated that NMSP-AD joined forces with other allied groups for the operation. However, due to ongoing field assessments, he could not provide a complete confirmation of the situation.

“We received preliminary information about the fighting near Mawkanin village around 6 AM. However, ground commanders have not yet reported full details, so we can only share limited information at this time,” he explained.

The clash caused temporary disruptions along the Ye-Thanbyuzayat road. By midday, traffic resumed, but military council troops had increased security measures, including strict checkpoints along the route. Locals have been advised to exercise caution when traveling through the area.

This incident follows a previous attack on December 3, when the Ye Blu group ambushed a military convoy on the same Ye-Thanbyuzayat road near Sone Nan Thar village in Ye Township.

While fighting along the Ye-Dawei road has decreased since October, recent reports suggest that clashes are increasing as military council forces strengthen their presence, conduct clearance operations, and face more frequent engagements with resistance groups along key routes.
