Maungdaw: Maungdaw District Chairman U Hla Win was transferred to Naypyidaw allegedly for corruption. He was said to be involved in many cases of corruption in Maungdaw in western Burma.
"He was transferred to Naypyidaw on August 29 and the newly appointed chairman U Aung Swe Nyunt has already arrived in Maungdaw to take over," a clerk from the Maungdaw district office said.
U Hla Win was transferred by higher authorities after he was found guilty of being involved in many corruption cases in Maungdaw during an interrogation.
The clerk said, "U Hla Win was facing many cases, including harassing of government workers in Maungdaw before he was transferred to Naypyidaw. Many employees complained to the higher authorities about their harassment at the district office."
U Hla Win was found guilty of corruption and harassment of his staff, but he was not punished by the higher authorities because he is a close associate of Home Minister General Maung Oo's family.
The clerk said that U Hla Win held his farewell ceremony on August 30 and proudly told those in attendance that he is happy to be going to Naypyidaw.
Corrupt government officials are rarely punished in Burma even if they have violated government principles, so long as they have good connections with the higher authorities in Naypyidaw.
