Cox's Bazaar: The Bangladesh Rifles pushed back 53 Burmese nationals to Burma on Tuesday when they were entering Bangladesh territory on board machine boats along the Naff River.

BDR personnel arrested the group in Teknaf Township at 11 a.m. on the day. They were later forced to return across the border to Burma.

It was learnt that they are Muslims from Nakondia Village in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State.

Ten families comprised the group including seven men, 16 women and 30 children.

A BDR source said that they were holding seven migrants when they entered Bangladesh territory on Sapuri Island without permission. Another 46 migrants were caught shortly thereafter at noon entering the same island.

One of the migrants told newsmen that Wahim an Islamic NGO inside Burma, had encouraged them to enter Bangladesh illegally for refuge.

Teknaf Rifles Battalion 42's second camp commander, Major Aminul Islam, told reporters that they plan to push back all illegal migrants from Burma as they have a duty to protect Bangladesh.

Many Muslims from Arakan State have to contend with this strategy of the Bangladesh authorities.
