Not less than 11 Muslim residents of Maungdaw township in western Burma were detained by the police while they allegedly tried to kill a village administrator, said a police officer of Maungdaw police station.
The incident took place at Kan Pur Muslim village near Alaythan Kyaw locality in southern part of Maungdaw township last week, when the group targeted the Muslim administrator by swords and other sharp weapons.
“The Kan Pur Muslim village administrator came to his village along with border security forces for checking the family lists in the village, but as soon as he arrived there, a group of Bengali speaking Muslim people targeted him by swords,” informed the police officer.
However, the village administrator managed to escape from the attack. Afterward, the police personnel picked up 11 Muslim villagers for the offence.
The police are investigating the case and trying to find the motive behind the attack. Moreover, they have produced the detainees before the judge on Thursday.
The Burma border security forces are presently checking the list of Muslim residents in western Burma border areas to find out if there were any illegal outsiders in the localities.
“The checking of the list of Muslim families in these villages is a regular exercise by the border authority and it is no way related to the census,” said an official from Maungdaw district immigration office.
This year, the family list has been checked by the Burma border security forces as the President Thein Sein had abolished the Nasaka force. Earlier the checking was done on a yearly basis.
