Yangon - The construction of Kyaukpyu Deep Sea Port, Rakhine State, has been completed, but its depth will not currently accommodate an oil tanker scheduled to arrive in November when the port is opened, said a member of the Kyaukpyu Deep Sea Port Watchdog Committee on October 10.
U Saw Moe Kyaw told Mizzima that the port that can accommodate a 62 feet (18.8 metre) deep draught, the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull, is not deep enough for 300,000-ton liners, which is causing a delay of commissioning the port into service.
He said that the port authority is currently working with experts from China making in an attempt to accept the arrival of an oil tanker with a 70 foot (21.3 metres) draught in November but that the vessel would not find it easy to dock at the port.
