In the past five days, at least 13 people have been killed and seven injured in Kyauktaw, in Burma’s western Rakhine State.
Widespread rioting led to the burning of an estimated 332 homes and one rice mill this past week in Kyauktaw, located 128 kilometers from Sittway, the capital of Rakhine State.
The rioting was a continuation of arson attacks in the township between local ethnic Rakhinese and Rohingya Muslims, said local officials.
On Wednesday, the local authorities imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Kyauktaw, bringing the number of areas placed under curfew in Rakhine State to seven.
According to local sources, two other areas – Minpya and Mrauk U – were also hit by renewed rampages. There was no report of the extent of losses.
Rakhine State has been under a state of emergency since June 10.
Since riots escalated in Rakhine State on June 8, up to 90 people have died, 116 people were injured and over 65,000 people displaced, according to the latest official figures.
