New Delhi (Mizzima) – To mark the Water Festival holidays, Aung San Suu Kyi has sponsored five young National League for Democracy members to become Buddhist monks during the festival.
NLD leaders led by Suu Kyi and Tin Oo, a senior leader, gave alms to monks from Pannitayama Monastery in Shwetaungkone Ward in Bahan Township in Rangoon.
Ohn Kyaing, a spokesperson of the NLD, told Mizzima that Suu Kyi and other NLD members and private donors sponsored 35 people to become monks. After the ordination ceremony, NLD leaders and relatives of the newly ordained monks gave alms to monks.
To become monks during the water festival, many NLD young members drew lots. The winners were Thi Han, Nyein Maung, Thet Aung, Thet Min Thein and Nyein Chan Thu.
Suu Kyi’s youngest son Htein Lin, aka Kim Aris, who made his first visit in about 10 years to Burma in November 2010, has arranged to temporarily become a Buddhist monk in Rangoon during the water festival, but so far he has not arrived in Rangoon, said Ohn Kyaing.
