The armies of India and Myanmar will jointly fight insurgent groups emanating from the northeast state of India, a senior Indian government official has said.
An Indian newspaper reported that the Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai, who had visited Yangon, Myanmar from February 19 to 21, said that underground groups active on Indo-Myanmar border areas will be eliminated by a joint-operation by India and Myanmar, for which the two countries have signed an agreement.
“The Burmese military will destroy all the camps of insurgent groups fighting against India on the Indo-Myanmar border areas. The junta has enough firepower and armed forces. We’ll be informed if they need help from us,” said Pillai.
The newspaper also said that officials had already handed over all maps, which display camp locations and area of operations of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), People’s Liberation Army (PLA) NSCN (Khaplang) and NSCN (Isak-Muivah) to Burmese Deputy Home Minister Brig. Gen. Phone Swe.
However, it is not clear when the join-operation will start.
Indian insurgent groups are camped in upper Chin state Tonzang, Cikha townships and Tamu township in Sagaing division with the blessings of the Burmese junta.
Besides, there are other Burmese insurgent groups like the Chin National Army (CNA), Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) and Arakan Liberation Army in those areas.
“The join-operation may take place but we have to wait and see whether it will come about,” said a spokesman of Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA).
He added that they are not afraid as they have a ceasefire with the Indian government now. But, the local people will suffer from pottering and forced labor used by the Burmese military personnel if there are clashes in the Indo-Myanmar border areas.-
