The administrator of Chin State’s Tuikin Village, U Yang Aung, has been suspended for misuse of power, according to villagers in Tuikin, which is located in Chin State’s Paletwa Township. The suspension came after villagers complained six times about power misuse by Mr. Yang Aung, including instances of discrimination; forced labor; violations of village rules; stealing public property; and extorting money from villagers. The villagers provided evidence of these incidents in letters written to Chin State’s chief minister from 2012-13.
After holding two hearings about the complaints Mr. Yang Aung was suspended pursuant to order no. 5/9-1/6 (259) issued by Paletwa Township Administrator U Han Win Aung on June 17th. Prior to being dismissed, U Yang Aung served in General Khin Nyunt’s military government.
“All the villagers disliked U Yang Aung for his dictatorial attitude. That’s why we complained about him in 2013, but no action was taken then. Villagers have lost money [they needed] for transportation. Since U Yang Aung might have spent a lot of money contesting the charges we are glad he was suspended,” a local told Khonumthung News.
U Aung Ko was appointed as Tuikin Village’s new administrator on June 28th in accordance with voting procedures set forth in Article 8 of the village administrative regulations. U Aung Ko garnered the second highest number of votes in the last village administrative election.
