Zomi National Congress’s (ZNC) application registration has been rejected as a legal party by the Union Election Commission (UEC) because the party’s name was deemed unacceptable by the central government.
The UEC has rejected the party’s application because they claim Zomi do not exist in Burma.
“They just want to deny us our rights,” said ZNC Chairman Pu Cin Sian Thang.
Many Teddim and Tonzang Township people in northern Chin state call themselves Zomi.
The party was officially registered as a political organization in 1988.
Under the leadership of Pu Cin Sian Thang, ZNC won two seats in Teddim and Tonzang constituencies, during the 1990 national elections. But the government cancelled its registration in 1992.
On March 8, the party submitted an official letter for registration to the UEC which was denied.
“Our application has not been totally rejected,” said Pu Cin Sian Thang “the UEC suggested we register the party with a different party name. They want us to submit the application by May 31.”
The ZNC party has announced they will submit a new registration application under a new name.
