7 December 2011: In a surprise move this month, Mr. Win Tun, Union Minister for Forests, has provided over 1.5 million lakh kyats (one lakh equals 100,000) to Chin State for its development and to bring down poverty in the state.
The minister provided 440 lakh kyats for the education, electricity and health sectors in Falam Township after a meeting with local people in Tawngzalatt Public Hall on December 3, said Mr. Nah Thang, a Hluttaw representative of the CPP.
The Minister provided 20 lakh kyats for Hmuntha and Khuava Middle Schools in Falam town, 100 more for Bualkhua and Khuabual Middle Schools, and 100 lakh kyats for a hospital in Falam, among other projects, said Mr Nah Thang.
At the same time, the Minister promised local people in the area that he would have the two village motor roads constructed. However, the minister did not give a time frame.
Mr. Win Tun also visited his father’s tomb in Falam. His father died while when Mr. Win Tun was working as a civil engineer in Falam Township.
Similarly, the Minister visited Than Tlang Town and provided it with 716 lakh kyats, but how the sum was to be used was not identified. He also promised to build more roads in the region.
“Reducing poverty, stepping up development programmes, road communication, health, education and electricity supply are the priority areas for Chin state,” said a town elder from Than Tlang town.
This is the minister’s second visit to Chin State in 2011.
