Twenty four refugees from six families were brought to Dhaka on 12 April for resettling in a third country, said a refugee from Nayapara camp.

They will be given training in culture for London for some days in Dhaka and will fly in 10 days to United Kingdom.

Since 2006, 171 Rohingya families comprising 749 people have been resettled in third countries. Before 2006, the UNHCR did not give priority for resettlement in third countries because most Rohingya refugees were seeking shelter in the two Muslim countries - Bangladesh and Malaysia. The UNHCR thought that Rohingya refugees should get more facilities than non-Rohingya refugees, but, in reality, the UNHCR, after surveying found that the Rohingya refugees did not get any extra facilities in these countries. So, UNHCR now gives priority to Rohingya refugees to resettle in third countries similar to other minorities of Burma, according to UNHCR reports.

The report further said that 278 refugees went to Canada, 166 refugees went to United Kingdom, 126 refugees to Australia, 82 refugees to Ireland, 50 refugees to New Zealand, 24 refugees to the USA, 19 refugees to Sweden and four refugee to Norway.

There are 28,000 documented Rohingya - an ethnic linguistic and religious minority who fled persecution in Burma in the two official refugee camps -- 11,000 refugees in Kutupalong camp and 17,000 refugees in Nayapara camp.

An additional 102 cases are pending with the UNHCR, including 54 cases for the USA.

Some refugees are being resettled annually from the two official camps.
