Marnagar News, Namtu — Residents of Panlon Village in Nothern Shan State's Namtu Township have been facing difficulties checking the final voter list due to errors on the voter list and because the list is sorted alphabetically, something most people aren't familiar with.
On an earlier version of the list, families did not need to search the whole list as their names were listed in order under the name of the household head. The new list has the names sorted alphabetically instead of by family so local residents many of whom can't read Burmese well are having difficulties checking and confirming their names.
“The first time around, family members were listed under the father’s name so it was convenient for everyone. The second time the list was in alphabetical order so we have to search the whole list. It isn’t difficult for those who can read, but those don’t know how to read don’t have time to spend to check it” said U Sai Saing Mai, a candidate running in Natmu Township’s Constituency No 2.
“They don’t know Burmese so it is very difficult for them to check the voter list. They don’t understand the voting process and aren’t interested in it. The entire family has to spend half a day to check the voter list so they don’t have time to spend. They have to struggle for their survival,” said Ko Tin Oo, a reporter covering the election in northern Shan State.
Nam Si Linn Village resident U Aik Htum says he's unaware of the details involving the voter list. “I don’t know when the voter list was released. I don’t know how many times it has been released. Even the village head doesn't know,” he said.
Although the latest voter list has been posted at Nam Si Linn Village in Panlon Village Tract in Namtu Township, no one has urged the residents to check it.
The Union Election Commission released the first voter list at the end of July and the second voter list from September 14th to 27th. Although the voter list has been released twice, the latest list still contains many errors.
