San Maung Than — The National League for Democracy (NLD) leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has the right to campaign for her party says the Arakan National Party (ANP) leader U Aye Thar Aung.  He made the remarks during the Nobel Prize winner’s visit to Arakan State last week. “Now, we are moving towards a multi party democratic system”, U Aye Thar Aung told Narinjara News. “During this period, a party’s leader has the right to campaign for his or her party and their candidates to win the election,” U Aye Thar Aung added.

Reached for comment, U Tun Kyi, the NLD’s vice-chairman in Toungup Township, emphasized some key points made by the NLD leader during her speech. “During the rally held in Toungup today (October 16), Daw Suu said the NLD will prioritize national reconciliation if it wins in the 2015 election.  Another thing is that one of the attendees raised a question about Bengalis entering [the country] if Daw Suu’s party wins the election. She responded that none of the NLD’s candidates are Bengalis at the moment,” U Tun Kyi said.

Mro National Democracy Party’s secretary U Htay Win said he welcomed Daw Suu’s visit. “Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is a leader of a party so she has the right to campaign for her party to win in the election.  Our Arakan people are also running as candidates for seats in the parliament and the Arakan Affairs Minister position in Rangoon,” said U Oo Kyaw Win, Chairman of Pauktaw Township Social Network.

Tens of thousands of people attended the public rally in Toungup. During the campaign so far Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has held campaign rallies in Kachin, Karenni, Chin, Mon and Arakan states and has travelled over 6,000 miles and visited 50 cities within three months.
