Chinese security officials on the border of Yunnan province held a meeting with Burmese Army officials from Triangle Region Command in Kengtung, the capital of eastern Shan State yesterday, reports from the Sino-Burma border said.

“There were six members on the Chinese side. But no details on the subject of their discussion emanated,” an informed source from Kengtung said. “However, most think that it may relate to ceasefire groups.”

On 23 September morning, dozens of Burmese Army soldiers were despatched by the Triangle Region Command to escort the Chinese delegation at Daluo of Yunnan, opposite Mongla, the headquarters of the National Democratic Alliance Army (NDDA) and 87 miles northeast of Kengtung, a source from Mongla said.

“Soldiers were in uniform and were fully armed. They came in four trucks,” the source said.

“They crossed Mongla to Talaw (Duluo). They [the Burmese soldiers] did not meet any Mongla authorities,” said another Mongla resident close to NDAA.

Meanwhile, Chinese officials from Menglian, opposite Panghsang, the capital of the United Wa State Army (UWSA) reportedly held a meeting with military officials from Northeastern Region Command as well, another source from the border said.

Sources say the meetings could be related to ceasefire groups. “They must have talked about ceasefire groups for sure,” a border watcher said.

Nevertheless, Chinese security officials and border watchers have said that China is yet to the ignore ceasefire groups based along its southwestern border because they are like the fence of its country.
