Clashes between the Shan State Army (SSA) and Burma Army occurred in Shan State on May 10 when the nationwide referendum was held according to rebel sources.
 
At dawn on the day of the referendum, a unit of the SSA's Brigade No. 759 ambushed a 20-man patrol from the Nawnglong based Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 513 near Nawngwoe village, Lawksawk Township.  Many soldiers were killed and injured.
 
On the same day at 8 a.m. SSA fighters attacked soldiers from the Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 513 near Phalam village. Some were killed and many were injured, according to the SSA.
 
The next day, from 8 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. a clash between the SSA Battalion No. 363 and the  Kunhing based Infantry Battalion (IB) No. 66 took place again near Kenglom, south of Taunggyi-Keng Tung highway, Kunhing township. Six soldiers were killed including a sergeant Tin Htay Hlaing, Personal No. 1745. Many were injured.
 
Again from 10 a.m. to 10:55 a.m. the SSA attacked a 55 strong patrol from Column No. 2, IB No. 66 near Kali east of Kunhing. A Corporal Aye Kyaw was killed and three soldiers were injured, the SSA said.
 
In the evening, the eastern Deputy Regional Commander, Brig-Gen Win Myint and Kunhing Area Commander Colonel Tin Maung Shwe came with four trucks carrying around 50 soldiers to conduct investigations into the clashes.
 
The SSA seized two MA4-M79 rocket launchers, one MA1 automatic rifle, one Kenwood transceiver and a number of cartridges.
