Shan leader Hkun Tun Oo, who was elected in the 1990 general elections, was given a hero’s welcome by hundreds of Shan migrants working in Bangkok on his arrival at the Suvanabhumi airport last night, according to Sai Hseng Ya, SHAN/DVB correspondent.
“I learned about his coming only at the last minute,” said a happy Shan worker Sak. “Had we been alerted earlier, there would have been more people here to greet him.”
Hkun Tun Oo, 69, who was accompanied by his daughter Algie and party public relations officer Sai Aung Thein, shook hands with and returned the greetings to his well wishers and took group photos with them.
He has long been suffering from Spondylosis which causes pain in his backbone and knees, according to Kawli Media, quoting party spokesman Sai Leik.
His party Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) re-registered on 12 June, 5 months after his release by general amnesty.
He is expected to remain in Bangkok for at least a week, according the Sai Leik.
