“The Life of The Buddha,” the most wellknown work of the late Burmese painter U Ba Kyi (1903-2000), in Thai version, has been on sale in Chiangmai since April.
[U Ba Kyi] While the original book, published by Burma’s Young Men Buddhist Association (YMBA) had 65 illustrations, its Thai version published by Silkworm Books and sold at Suriwong Book Center, at 285 baht ($9.5), has only 53. The 12 others were left out as they were about the history of Buddhism in Burma, according to the foreword by the publisher.
It was also reprinted in two languages, English and Burmese, by the Theravada Buddhist Society of America in 1994.
“I found copies of the book in many homes in Burma, when I was young,” said Khuensai Jaiyen, Editor of Shan Herald Agency for News (SHAN). “Especially in Shan homes, it was usual to find it on the shelf of the home shrine.”
U Ba Kyi was a student of another great artist U Ba Nyan (1897-1945). His further studies were in England, France, United States and China.
The book, 112 pages, was printed in the People’s Republic of China.
