Rangoon Region Election Commission chairman Ko Ko said on Wednesday that objections over the accuracy of the rolls and corrections began on February 29 and ended on Tuesday.

“We have given them sufficient time. They must do the work within this time,” he told Mizzima.

He said that the 2012 by-election electoral rolls were prepared based on the 2010 general election electoral register and updated before being announced. He said that complaints against mistakes on the rolls could be lodged with the election commissions concerned with prescribed forms within the stipulated time. Parliament Election Rule section 11(d) stipulates that complaints, objections and revisions cannot be accepted if the deadline is over, he said.

Officials of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party said that in some vacant constituencies, the election commissions concerned announced the electoral register later than the prescribed date, preventing many people from making corrections.

NLD Pyapon District election committee member Kyaw Zeya said that the electoral rolls of polling stations in 19 villages of Pyapon Township were not announced until March 3, and the electoral roll for Min Hla Su village in Pyapon District was not announced until March 4.

Kalaw Township NLD campaign committee member Khin Moe Moe said that the electoral roll for the Kalaw constituency in Shan State was announced on March 6.

Khin Moe Moe told Mizzima that the NLD would try to submit its information about inaccuracies found in the electoral rolls by counting from the date when the actual announcement was made by the ward or village electoral commission concerned.

In the electoral register for Taungnyunt Rahta Ward in Mingalataungnyunt Township, Rangoon Region, the names of deceased persons, insane persons and people who have moved to other locations are included, numbering about 1,181 people, out of a total of about 2,000 eligible voters on rolls, according to NLD member Yarza, who said he informed the ward election commission of the mistakes on Tuesday.

Thu Wei, a candidate in the Mingalataungnyunt constituency for the Democratic Party (Myanmar), said, “These mistakes were found in the last 2010 general election too. The names of some entire households were not included in the electoral register and at the same time, the names of deceased were included. We could not get the electoral registers in 2010. So we don’t know if the same person cast a vote once or ten times. Some cast their votes more than one time.”
