A Muslim youth from Dar Pai village under Sittwe township was shot dead by a policeman in front of 36 number police battalion on Sunday morning.
According to a resident of Bumay village, the police battalion is located in their village and adjacent to Sittwe University.
The victim has been identified as Maung Zawl Mir Husong. The 20 years old individual was shot dead by a police man without any reason, claimed a witness.
The young Muslim man along with another boy was picked up by the police battalion (number 36) as they were travelling from Darpain to Bumay village on a motorcycle at around 7 am on 4 September.
"They could not speak the Burmese very fluently. They showed their Covid-19 test cards. Then a policeman put a gun on the rider and fired. He died on the spot. It is so barbaric to shoot someone like this,” he added.
Locals allege that the other man is still in police custody. They took Maung Zawl Mir Husong to the hospital in a police car.
Narinjara News contacted Sittwe township police chief and Rakhine State military council border minister through telephone but unable to get their responses.
According to the latest information, the parents and some elders of Dar Pai village were contacted by the military council officials. The parent was forced to receive Kyats 500,000 and signed on a paper terming the death as an accident.
