Foodpanda delivery riders go on strike

The Food Panda delivery riders, whose wages were being exploited, went on strike to demand full employee rights.

The delivery riders and the companies have been negotiating several times since March over the loss of basic rights and workers’ rights, however, the company failed to address the issues and so they had to go on strike without going to work.

The riders demanded seven points: to pay a minimum wage of 670 kyats depending on the delivery distance; to amend the strict rules controlled by software; to provide assistance by the company if there is an accident during working hours; to give one full day off a week; to release the emergency announcement one week in advance on the official social media and Telegram channels; to provide a hotline number for direct contact with the company in case of any problems; and issue ID cards for delivery riders.

“The employer has refused to pay the 670 per delivery fee, and doesn't allow us to use Google Maps. The other five points are being implemented. The strike started because they did not implement it for three months, “said the leader of the Food Panda rider strike, Ko Bo Min Din.

The riders said if the company does not address these issues, the strike will continue until June 12.

And consumers are also urged to join the strike by ordering food directly from the riders without ordering food through Food Panda company.

The strike leaders said FoodPanda riders across the country have also joined the strike.

The boycott was joined by FoodPanda riders from five nations, including Thailand, Malaysia, and Germany. The corporation has so far failed to respond to the demands of Food Pander riders.
