Fire broke out inside UNHCR office in Maungdaw

An incident of fire broke out inside the compound of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) located near the 3 mile junction of  Maungdaw township in western Myanmar on 25 April.

Maungdaw township fire director Tun Shwe Khaing informed  that the incident took place at around 10 am as a staff set a large volume of dried leaves on fire inside the office campus of UNHCR local representative.

The fire soon spread to other items like plastic chairs in the  compound between guest house and other rooms.

"I believe the staff set the bamboo leaves on fire and forgot to put it out. The fire could spread to other items also. However, we could douse the fire within 30 minutes,” he added.

More than 10 plastic chairs were damaged in the fire, market values of which would be kyats 100,000.

Maungdaw township fire department informed that the UNHCR office has already informed the city police station for necessary investigation about the incident and necessary actions if needed.
