Kachin National Congress Chair Arrested In Naypyitaw

The military junta arrested the Kachin National Congress (KNC) chairperson near his medical office in Naypyitaw.

"A group in plainclothes arrested Dr. M Kawn La, but because they were not in uniform, we don't know if they were police or soldiers,'' a representative from the Kachin party told NMG.

The men grabbed the Kachin leader at about 4 pm on Wednesday, August 25, and confiscated his vehicle, another KNC source said, explaining that no one knows where they took him.

KNC members met to discuss the chairperson's arrest and his disappearance.

M Kawn La contested the 2015 and 2020 general elections. During the recent race, he unsuccessfully campaigned for a seat in the House of Nationalities for Momauk Township.

Following the February 1 coup, under M Kawn La's leadership, the KNC and other Kachin parties and leaders formed the Kachin People's Political Front.
