Protests Against Military Govt Erupt Across Chin State

Nearly 10,000 people protested against the military government today in Hakha, during the second day of protests in the Chin State capital.

For the third day in a row, over 2,500 demonstrated in the town of Falam yesterday. More than 40 teachers and staff from Longpee Agricultural School joined the protest to condemn the Tatmadaw's coup on February 1.

"We demand an end to the military dictatorship and for a federal democratic system to be implemented in the country,” a teacher told Khonumthung News.

Many bystanders showed solidarity with the demonstrators by flashing three-fingers, a gesture adopted from the movie series The Hunger Games, also popular among protests in neighboring Thailand. Other residents clapped their hands. Some businesses in Falam closed their shops to show support for protesters.

Residents of Matupi and Mindat towns, located in southern Chin State, also resisted against the military government for two days, starting this Monday.

“We don't want a military dictatorship in our country," said a university student, who joined over 5,000 protesters that took to the streets of Mindat on Tuesday.

More than 3,000, including teachers, health workers and civil servants, protested in Matupi on Tuesday.

“We're unhappy the Burma Army seized control of the country. We want democracy!” said a youth leader.

Despite a recent ban on gatherings of more than five people, hundreds of thousands across the country continued protesting against the military dictatorship. Police fired water cannons at demonstrators in Naypyidaw and Mandalay. In Mandalay, they used tear gas and beat up demonstrators. There were also unconfirmed reports of live rounds being fired in the nation's capital, killing a young woman and injuring another.
