Storm kills three, one missing, destroy many buildings in Rakhine State

Three people died and one is missing after a storm hit the Rakhine State on May 29.

A total of 118 homes, 19 schools, 12 religious buildings, and a market stall have been damaged by the storm.

“This is the damaged assets list from Kyaukpyu and Thandwe districts. Even though they have been damaged, there hasn't been any huge damage,” said U Thawdar, state officer of the Rakhine State Fire Services Department.

The three deceased residents are from Manaung Township. U Pyae Tun (age 78) from Hmaw Tar Oo Village died after a coconut tree fell on him and U Sein Chan Aung (age 63) and Daw Ma Han Shwe (age 53), a couple from Kan Lat Village of Oh Su Group, died from electrocution.

U Than Zaw (age 43) from Thandwe has gone missing after a fishing boat sunk.

“Thandwe has the highest number of damaged homes. Forty-seven homes and one religious building have been damaged in Thandwe Township. A total of 24 homes, five schools, and four religious buildings have been damaged in Toungup,” said state officer U Thawdar.    

A total of 21 homes have been damaged in Ann Township, 17 homes, five schools, and six religious buildings have been damaged in Manaung Township, three homes and a school have been damaged in Maei, four homes, five schools, a religious building, and a market stall have been damaged in Ramree Township, and two homes and three schools have been damaged in Kyaukpyu Township.
