Maungdaw: A high level team of officials in Arakan State's capital Sittwe came to Maungdaw yesterday to investigate allegations that the Maungdaw Township chairman sexually abused a female clerk, said a teacher close to the township authorities.

"The case is being investigated and many officials and other staff from the township administration office have been summoned by the team to investigate the case just a day after the team arrived in Maungdaw," the teacher said.

Maungdaw Township chairman U Mya Maung (51) sexually abused a female clerk Ma Pru Ma Oo (29) at the township administration office.

"I heard that many officials and staff admitted to the real facts of the relationship between U Mya Maung and Ma Pru Ma Oo during the investigation," the teacher said.

U Myint Maung is married to Nin Lae Soe, who is a judge in Buthidaung Township 16 miles east of Maungdaw.

Ma Pru Ma Oo was suspended by the Maungdaw district authorities after she was sexually abused by the Maungdaw Township chairman, but the authorities took no punitive action against the township chairman.

Narinjara reported the story on March 5, 2008, in the article titled, "Female clerk suspended after sexual abuse by chairman", and released the story to readers on the internet in both English and Burmese.

"The higher authorities in Naypyidaw likely received the information from Narinjara News. Afterward, they sent a powerful team of authorities to investigate the case," the teacher said.

Townspeople from Maungdaw told Narinjara over the phone yesterday that the Maungdaw Township chairman is likely to be fired from his job as the allegations of sexual abuse are true, and officials and staff have given detailed information about his actions to the investigative team.
