In a further fracturing of Mon political forces, several leading members of the All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMDP) have en masse resigned.

The representatives from the party’s Mawlamyine township office cited indecisiveness leadership for pushing them out.

The seven resignations include the Mawlamyine office chair, Nai Aung Chan, and central committee member and township secretary Nai Aung Than, also known as Saw Non. The members signed and submitted their notice to party headquarters on October 25.

The AMRDP was supposed to be collaborating with the Mon National Party in order to forge a more unified, and politically competitive front for Mon politics ahead of the 2020 polls. But little headway appears to have been made on the endeavor.

“We have been waiting for the merger. Time has passed, but the merger hasn’t happened. We believe the inability to negotiate the merger is due to the indecisiveness of the leaders. So, we won’t follow them anymore,” said Nai Aung Chan.

He added that he would willingly join any organization ready to strive for uniting Mon politicians under a single banner. But Nai San Tin, joint secretary of the AMRDP, said the members’ exit lays too much fault at the party’s feet.

“If they want to resign, they can resign easily,” he said, adding, “the merger issue cannot be carried out by us alone.”Nai San Tin said the party’s central executive committee will hold a meeting soon to discuss the resignations.

The AMRDP registered as a party in 2010 and currently has over 20,000 members in Mon State, Kayin (Karen) State and Tanintharyi Region.
