The United Nationalities Federation Council (UNFC) has asked the Japanese government to be part of the peace negotiations between the Burmese government and the 11 ethnic member organization.
According to the UNFC’s General Secretary, Nai Hong Sar, they requested to the Japanese government to act as a mediator, following a recent meeting with The Nippon Foundation. But they are still waiting for an answer.

“U Aung Min invited us to a meeting sometime after Nov. 4, however, we haven’t officially responded yet. We need time for everyone in the council to discuss it,” said Nai Hong Sar.
Out of the eleven ethnic groups in the UNFC, six groups have already signed peace agreements with the central government. Only the five groups which have not can attend upcoming meetings, according to a government representative.
If the UNFC and the government continue political discussions with all of the members they will follow UNFC’s Six Point Ethnic Peace Road Map that they decided on last September.
The Nippon Foundation told the UNFC they will meet soon regarding the request.
