Urgent Aid Needed for 90,000 War-Displaced Individuals in Northern Shan State

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has declared that approximately 90,000 individuals displaced by war in northern Shan State urgently require assistance, as a result of the escalating conflict between the Military Council and the Three Brotherhood Alliance.

UNOCHA said US$1 million from the Myanmar Humanitarian Fund will be disbursed to support those responding to emerging needs in northern Shan State, however, this support is insufficient to meet the surge in needs.

Key routes in the region remain blocked both by the Military Council and the Three Brotherhood Alliance, and all travel routes to northern Shan remain restricted

UNOCHA also called for a halt in clashes and unimpeded access by all parties are critical to ensuring the delivery of timely, life-saving services to people in need.

Intense fighting in northern Shan State is escalating daily, leading to a rise in the number of displaced individuals affected by the war.

Nevertheless, UNOCHA underscores its commitment to closely monitor the security situation and stands prepared to implement humanitarian assistance processes at the appropriate time.

Both the Military Council and resistance forces have blocked the Lashio-Muse Road, a crucial artery for transporting goods in the region, leading to significant hardships for the local population in accessing essential food and healthcare services.

Currently transportation and banking operations in northern Shan State have experienced delays, causing a decline in cash flow and a notable surge in the prices of essential food items. Consequently UNOCHA has highlighted that the capacity to undertake humanitarian efforts has been diminished.

Operation 1027, initiated by the Three Brotherhood Alliance on October 27th, is gaining momentum, and the battleground area is gradually expanding.

The Three Brotherhood Alliance emphatically declared that Operation 1027, aimed at eradicating the military dictatorship, is intended to extend its reach nationwide by forging connections with resistance forces across the country.
