Military Council issues directive to stop any new construction of Religious Buildings belonging to Christian and Muslim faiths in Paletwa

Chin State — The Department for the Promotion and Propagation of Sasana (Religions) in Paletwa Township, under the Junta , has declared its intention to address the issue of unauthorized religious constructions within Chin State's Paletwa Township.

According to a Christian clergy member in the township, there have been no new constructions or expansions of religious buildings in Paletwa since the issuance of the directive, and as of now, no enforcement actions have been initiated.

Over 80 percent of the population in Chin State practices Christianity. The Chin Human Rights Organization has additionally reported that, following the coup, the Military Council's airstrikes and shelling have resulted in the damage of at least 95 religious structures in Chin State.

The directive specifies the need to halt the unauthorized construction or expansion of religious structures in Paletwa, take legal measures upon investigation of such incidents, and promptly report the completion of these actions to the pertinent state-level authorities.

"I’ve heard that the directive is in the hands of the General Administration office. It might make it harder to build new religious buildings because they seem to have new procedures and permits in place. I haven't built anything new, so I can't say I've faced those difficulties myself yet”, he told Khonumthung News.

Certain local residents have voiced their concerns, regarding the limitations imposed on the construction and expansion of religious structures, as a potential infringement on the freedom of faith. Situated in the southern part of Chin State, Paletwa is a diverse community comprising Christians, Buddhists, and Muslims.
